How do you rank this citizen journalism?

In time, the world has evolved through the advancement of technology. One of the fast develop sector is, the journalism. Back in the old days, people rely on the mainstream media to gain information. However, people start to use other incentive as their information’s sources as the credibility of mainstream media, is questioned. Well, it is right to say, it has to do with the birth of ‘citizen journalism’.

Citizen journalism is usually related to political activists who wish to challenge society’s established institutions and power relations (Allan & Thorsen, 2009). Most countries, their mainstream media are controlled by the government as it is one of the best ways for them to retain their power. Due to that, all the information can be considered as bias and only portray one sided of the story which is more likely, pro to the government. Well, people get tired of the endless drama by the government, and tried to get objective information. So, they prefer to subscribe that news edited by this citizen journalist as it offers fresh news, from different angle.

Citizen journalism, can be best describe as a type of first-person reportage in which any individuals would be able to play the role of a journalist in order to participate in news making (Allan, 2013). It means, anyone can actually publish news, and provide different perspective news coverage. Well, it is great to have various sources of news, rather than just focus on what been posted by the mainstream media.

Other than that, the citizen journalism is strongly related to the product of digital culture (Rutigliano, 2008). This citizen journalism only been constructed lately, because of the evolvement of digital culture. If before this, it is a bit hard to those people to publish news, but now it only one click away.

This citizen journalism does provided some benefits to the people, but not forgotten the side of it as well. Yes, it helps to get non-bias news. However, is that possible to rely on news that written by those who do not master the ethic of being a journalist? Well, we have the right to be the judge. So, what say you?

  1. salam dan selamat sejahtera.

in my opinion, to spread the news we don't need any certification. we just have to make sure the news is reliable and not bias. nowadays, most of people don't believe in traditional journalism because most of them will bias when they want to write any news in their newspaper.

for me, we can be a good citizen journalism but we have to make sure we know the truth about the news that we want to share it with others.

    1. I am afraid, I would be disagree with you this time around. We can't just put our faith on a thing that is uncertain. How do you expect, people out there to gain the right information, if they keep on rely on these 'citizen journalism'. I doubt, it is right thing to do, to keep our faith in 'citizen journalism'.

  2. I agree with alp fnd which we can be a good citizen journalism because people usually love to seprate the news which the truth of information come from news what they get from the sourse rather than copying the reported news which they also do not know the value of the news of what they will separate. Meaning to say, I love to read the citizen journalism news rather than reporters because the news what the separate not the 100% the truth. For example, in online newpapers i love to readd the comment of public rather that read the news information because some of public are the witness of the news rather that reporters news just collect the source and combine with others responded to make a news. Sometimes public more aggressive to story the truth story

  3. Betul kata-kata ieff.
